Terra Nova Touch Tank / Bassin tactile
The touch tank at Terra Nova's Visitors' Center offers a chance to gently touch live sea creatures! These are the same species you could find in the intertidal waters near the Center's wharf. The starfish is very soft to touch, even though it looks spiny! The anemones are very sensitive. They can withdraw their filaments very quickly. You can see periwinkles and hermit crabs among the rocks and seaweed.

Terra Nova - July 30 Bears! Ours! 30 juillet!
Mama bear checks around my cabin! Maman ourse surveille autour de ma cabane! (I was inside at this point. À ce moment, j'étais à l'intérieur.) |
Three cubs climb a tree! Trois oursons grimpent un arbre! |
The cubs hold onto each other! Les oursons se tiennent! |
Mama bear was attracted to the aroma of baking brownies! It was a warm morning and I had windows open in the cabin. After I had finished cleaning up and set the brownies to cool on the table, I gathered up my gear to go hiking. I locked and closed the cabin door with a loud thump and opened the trunk to the car. About four or five feet to my right, I saw the large, round rear end of a black bear scrambling away from me around to the back of the cabin!
As quickly as possible, I unlocked the door and went back inside the cabin. I looked out of the kitchen window to see three bear cubs climbing a tree behind the cabin. After taking a few photos of them, I noticed mama bear below my window, so I took the photo above! I reported the sighting to Parks Canada and two staff members came to talk to me. By this time the bears were hidden in the bushes somewhere else.
The important thing about black bears is to make a lot of noise so they know where you are. After this, I would bang the cabin door open and closed a few times before going outside! I also kept the windows closed while baking! Apparently other people saw the same bears that day in the area. At Terra Nova, black bears, staff and visitors coexist.

Terra Nova - Iceberg!
A phenomenal boat ride yesterday, circling this iceberg and taking time to photograph all its nuances. A big thank you to park staff members Dave and Barb for this experience!

Terra Nova - Cap Malady Head
Spectacular view from the lookout at the end of the Malady Head trail. The trail is steep but worth the effort! I have taken hundreds of photos and I am working on a series of drawings and sketches.

Shore leave; à terre! |
Tourist shot. Cliché touristique. |
Row houses climb the hill. Les maisons en rangées montent la colline. |
Clourful shops; des boutiques vives. |
Freak Lunchbox! Façade formidable! |
While I have enjoyed my short visit to downtown St. John's, it is in the less developed lands that I find inspiration! The atmosphere is relaxed, the people are friendly. While it rains and is foggy, the sun does come out from time to time, all on the same day! This morning was dark and cloudy. The rain set in around noon-time. Then the sky cleared in the early evening. Tomorrow is shopping day. I need to buy rubber boots for walking some of the trails in Terra Nova Park. My hiking boots took 48 hours to dry out after my most recent trek through a forest.

Terra Nova - Sentier Mill Cove Trail
Climb to the top to see the view! |
Rain over the town of Trayton. La pluie au-dessus la ville de Trayton. |
This new trail leads through a young forest to boulders and the round hilltop overlooking Mill Cove. I decided to climb down and go back to my cabin when I could see the rain in the distance.

Terra Nova - Chutes Passamare Falls
The Passamare Falls, a place for contemplation. Les chutes Passamare, un endroit pour contempler. |

Terra Nova Artist Rsidency NL
Salvage, NL |
Salvage, NL |
Salvage, NL
I am priviledged to participate in the Artist in the Park Residency in Terra Nova National Park on eastern coast of central Newfoundland. I have been exploring and getting my bearings for the drawing project I will be working on while in the park. I've already taken over 100 photos as possible references. There are trails to discover and vistas of rocky hills and islands refelcted in the coastal waters. Yesterday was a fabulous warm and sun-filled day. I was impressed with the small fishing village of Salvage. It is a gem!
The day before, I walked a short distance on the Heritage Trail. After a good soaking, the forest undergrowth was spectacular! I have begun some studies on black paper.
