Iceland: Reflections and Tiny Worlds

Farm below Esja Mountain
The sun highlights the summits through occasional breaks in the clouds.

Back to my investigations of tiny worlds!

Incredible mosses!
The farm in the photo above shows the grand scale of Esja Mountain. The weather and the reflections change continuously. During the day, rain sprinkles the land and encourages the mosses and the lavender and violet European Cardamine that blooms in lush clumps on rocks near the shore. These miniature worlds remind me of the work of Icelandic artist Eggert Péterssun. I have admired his work in art journals - now I am seeing the inspiration for it.

Last evening I began working on my project - two quick drawings in my large sketchbook. I'll be doing more today.  Luckily I found a jig saw in the residency studio, so I can shape the panels I brought with me.

View from Korpúlsstađir, Reykjavik, Iceland

Esja mountain

Esja produces its own vaporous clouds.

Where are Aragorn and the Hobbits?

The iconic 'Midnight Sun' at about 11:00 pm local time

I am installed in my home and studio away from home for the month of July at Korpúlsstađir on the outskirts of Reykjavik. Esja Mountain changes continuously under low, shifting clouds. Last evening shortly after 10 PM I went for a walk with my flat-mate Geneviève.  The walking trails follow the contours of the coastline opposite the mountain. I could imagine J.R.R. Tolkein wandering this landscape and dreaming of trolls, elves, wizards and orcs. Several golfers asked me if I had found any elves yet!

'Dark Water' Opening / 'Eau sombre, matière sombre' vernissage

Galerie 12 June 5, 2015 - Photo by Sarah de Niverville
The opening of 'Dark Water, Dark Matter' at Galerie 12, Aberdeen Cultural Centre on Friday, June 5, was a big success. Thank you to everyone who attended! It was a celebration of this new series of low relief panels that I will be continuing.  It is wonderful to see the work properly lighted and all together. The new gallery lights cast lace-like shadows through the incised Plexiglass panels.  I am inspired to work much larger and to use deeper 'spacers' to make better use of the shadows cast on the wall.
